The #94 & #96black is a pigmented waterproof blacks where the #99 is a dye based black similar to the colors. When printing in 4 color PHOTO MODE (using the #94 & #96) your printer does not use the black ink to print photos since it is pigmented and pigmented and dye based inks do not mix well at all. When using the Photo Cartridge # 99 your printer does use the black to print photos since it, like the colors is dye based. This is why when printing photos it is recommended to use the #99 cartridge. You change your printer from a 3-color photo printer to a complete 6-color photo printer. Not a Universal Ink Some companies want you to believe that all ink formulations are the same. This is simply not the case. As a matter of fact even within the same manufacturers product line there are great variations in the inks. Some inks are dye based while others are pigmented. When new technology emerges, or when the printer places ink according to built in algorithms different from previous printer models, the formulation of the ink changes. This is a great example of why newer printers can print at higher resolutions than older printers, color gamuts are better suited towards photos and why inks dry faster than ever before. Our inks are specific. We DO NOT span printer series and do not carry One-Size-Fits-All-Inks. end of story. Pigmented vs. Dye Cartridges like the HP #94 & #96 use a high quality pigmented, waterproof black ink. It is not uncommon for refill kit companies to substitute the high quality pigmented inks for a lesser (or even cheap) dye based black alternative. We only use pigmented black inks for cartridges that originally use pigmented black inks. We do not substitute for a cheaper dye based ink just to save a dollar or two and you shouldn't either. Tips on refilling. H P utilizes a thermal ink jet technology to dispense ink. This technology heats ink to several hundred degrees to form a bubble within the cartridge heating elements. When the bubble bursts it shoots the ink out of the cartridge jet. What cools the heating element is the next drop of ink. It is strongly recommended that you refill prior to a cartridge completely running out of ink so that the heating elements do not burn up. This is especially true with the new series of HP printers using the 94, 95, 96, 97 & 99 cartridges. These printers do not have a "stop on empty" feature and will allow you to continue to print even after a cartridge is completely out of ink. It is strongly recommended that you pull cartridges out of the printer when the initial "ink level low" dialog box appears on your computer screen.
